At the River

By Sarah Law

When John poured out the water

there were waves

of sapphire, cyan, sound

as though the air

as well as river gathered,

shivered round

his form a living stone

on holy ground.

And as the liquid rippled

like a voice

His baptism became

the water’s choice,

as though his body

risen and descending

was itself

the word which caused

the silence to refract

so God was heard.

The water soaks the light;

the light, the world.
