Twist

by Jack Kane

Even in laughter the heart may sorrow
Proverbs 14:13

But can our sorrow bring forth joy?

You know the kind,

That frozen hand of

Deep surrender’s call,

Inscribed on faces twisting

From rigidity to grief,

As pleas grown inward from

Long-silent psalms

Turn out their tendrils

Opening like tender birch bark

Toward sunlight, red and pale.

I open up my arms and say,

That’s it, that's it.

Pour it all out.

Your eyes are

Tragicomic with belief, and

We're a belly laugh away

From beauty,

You know the kind,

That must have known

One such thief on a cross.
